Kamiel Verschuren

Kamiel Verschuren [b. 1968] is an interdisciplinairy artist based in Rotterdam. His range of activities focusses on investigating and expanding the concept and existential experience of space, including drawing, photography, (graphic-) design, sculpture, text-or sound based installations, architectural- or enviromental-projects, social projects and public events. His working method consists of social activities, collaborations and engagement through problematising specific spatial or social circumstances. He works on an individual bases or in collaboration with other artists and is an active member in several aritists' initiatives such as Foundation B.a.d (1987) and Studio NL 01.08.04. He is part of the advice commity of TENT. Centre for Visual Arts Rotterdam and a guest teacher (2004-2005) at the AKI Enschede, dept. Monumental. Since 2001 he works on a wide range of projects in the district of Charlois Rotterdam as recently presented in TRACER (2004). Current public commissions are a landscape-design as art work: 'no more, no less' for the exterior of the dome prison in Breda, and a large landscape design 'there is the future'for a public area and playground in Zutphen. Together with Thom Gallant he is commissioned to organize a new and annual Poetry & Art festival, 'NewCanvas©2004-2006', for Poetry International Festival Rotterdam for the comming 3 years (2004-2006). Since 2001 he was involved in several artists' exchange programs in Budapest, Dresden, Casablanca and Japan. Together with Jasper Niens he recently opened a new art and production space in Rotterdam, Studio Pompstraat.  In the last 3 years he was either founder or co-founder of several foundations such as NAC, iStrike and Studio NL 01.08.04. The foundations are initiated to develop cultural activities, allowing the possiblility to create new platforms for artistic developments.
